Preparing furniture for moving

Posted on: 30 December 2019

Moving house is a busy time: from changing addresses to packing up clothes and books, there's a lot to do. One of the most important parts of preparing for your move is getting your furniture ready, but with a little preparation and the help of a qualified furniture removal firm, this doesn't have to be a challenge.

Getting started

The first thing you'll need to do when getting ready to move your furniture is decide what you're going to take and what you intend to sell, give away, or dispose of. Once you know what you need to transport, you'll need to look for a furniture removalist. The earlier you start this process, the better; by booking your move early, you'll have more options to choose from and a better chance of getting the date and price you want.

Dismantling furniture

Some items of furniture are small enough to move as one piece, but larger items are often easier to move if they're taken apart. This could be as simple as removing drawers from a chest of drawers or shelves from a bookcase; alternatively, it could mean unscrewing legs from tables or desks. When breaking down larger items of furniture, make sure to keep track of small pieces such as screws or shelf supports. Pack them in a toolbox or in small plastic bags and label them clearly to make sure that you can find the parts you need when you arrive.

Protecting your furniture

Packing fragile and vulnerable items correctly is the key to avoiding damage in transit. You'll want to pay special attention to large, flat surfaces such as tabletops. Corners are also especially vulnerable to chipping and other damage, as are glass items like tabletops or cabinet doors. Wrap corners with bubble wrap or other soft packing material and sandwich glass or other fragile surfaces between layers of bubble wrap and cardboard. To protect larger items from scratches and smudges, use padded blankets. Your furniture removal firm may be able to supply you with the packing materials you need.

Making a floor plan

One of the most important things you can do to ensure a smooth move is to plan the process of unpacking. Acquire a floor plan of your new home and sketch in where you want your furniture to go. This will influence the loading order and help your furniture removalists unload quickly and efficiently.
