How to prepare your furniture for removal

Posted on: 23 September 2020

Using a removalist is the smart way of shipping your furniture when you are moving house. However, there are some things you can do in advance to make sure the move goes as smoothly as possible.

Check if you need it

You may not need all of your furniture in your new home - in fact you may not have needed it at the old one. Think carefully about whether you need to take everything with you. It may be possible to sell furniture you do not need or, failing that, to give it away. This will reduce your costs and make the move easier, as well as leaving your new home less cluttered.

Clear the hallways

If you want the removalists to carry your furniture out of your house, you will need to give them room to do so. Make sure that hallways are clear and free of trip hazards. You should plan the route from the furniture to the van to make sure there is a clear path. Remember that the removalists will want to take large items of furniture before the rest of your belongings, so there is no point leaving bags and boxes of other items in the way.

Dismantle what you can

Your removalists may be happy to dismantle larger items of furniture themselves, but you can help if you can dismantle some of the easier items in advance. Flat-pack furniture, for example, is usually easy to take apart and put together again. Do not try dismantling anything if you are worried that you might damage it or hurt yourself, though.

Disconnect electrical items

Large electrical appliances should all be disconnected before the move. Fridges and freezers should be emptied and defrosted. You should also thoroughly clean large items before moving, especially kitchen appliances such as ovens. Any remote controls should be packed along with the appliance so they don't get lost in the move.

Plan where everything will go

If you already know in advance where the furniture will go in your new house, your removalist can put it in position when they deliver it. This will save a lot of extra moving around afterward and will ensure that nothing is blocking another item of furniture.

A little advance planning and preparation will ensure that your furniture is moved quickly and safely. Just talk to your removalist if you have any questions or concerns.
